Bangla Games open today

The 2nd Indo-Bangladesh Bangla Games will kick off today with the Bengali speaking neighbours of Bangladesh and India competing for glory in nine sport disciplines.

Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed will inaugurate the five-day meet at 3.30pm at the Bangabandhu National Stadium amid fanfare.

Bangladesh Television and ATN Bangla will telecast the gala opening ceremony live.

The competition of the Games of Friendship, however, will begin tomorrow in Dhaka and its adjacent districts.

67 GOLD
A total of 67 gold medals will be at stake in athletics, swimming, shooting, football (men’s and women’s), volleyball, kabaddi, basketball, kho kho and cricket — which makes its debut in the game sin the form of Twenty20 — over 400 athletes from the two contingents.

Bangladesh had won 30 gold medals against West Bengal’s 38 in the first version of the Games in Kolkata two years back but this time, the hosts are eyeing 40 gold medals in familiar conditions.

DOWN MEMORY LANE
The visiting team, which received warm welcomes on way to the capital from Benapole border, arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday night and spent a memorable day yesterday.

It was part of the plan that the athletes from the other side of the border will observe ‘Amar Ekushey’ and the International Mother Language Day. The visitors were overwhelmed by the way Bangladeshis pay tribute to the language martyrs and had an absorbing experience after placing floral wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar last morning.

“I would have never understood the passion that the people of Bangladesh show on ‘Ekushey February’. The discipline they show is also exemplary,” said West Bengal contingent’s Chef-de-Mission Zulfiqar Hassan, who led the team’s ‘Prabhat Ferry’.

“We are grateful to the Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) for organising this trip and give us a chance to get involved,” said Bengal Olympic Association’s secretary general Kamolesh Chatterjee.

The athletes on the other hand, walked down memory lane, especially those whose ancestors belonged to this part of Bengal.

Jahar Das, whose father came from Tangail and mother from Jamalpur, told he would never forget the visit to the Shaheed Minar.

Tapan Ganguly felt he was at home after passing through Madaripur, the land of his forefathers, on way to Dhaka.

Rahmatullah, who finished third in men’s 100m in India’s National Athletics, has travelled a lot but felt he belonged to this place. “The way the people greeted us from the street side, I was enthralled,” said the sprinter.

REWARDS
The local swimmers winning gold will get Tk 5,000 as reward, announced Bangladesh Swimming Federation’s vice-president Mahbubur Rahman Shahin. The silver medallists will get Tk 3,000 and a bronze winner Tk 2,000.

TICKETS
The gallery tickets for the opening ceremony will cost Tk 20 each. The spectators will not only be able to enjoy paratrooper landing and displays during a marathon opening ceremony but also a concert by leading band singer Ayub Bachchu, who also performs the Games theme song. Awaiting a revival

If it is a matter of confidence then there was no shortage of it for the home side prior to the start of the first Test against the formidable South Africa.

Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful sounded lofty despite their disastrous performances in Sri Lanka and New Zealand and their record against the Proteas is more than lacklustre with innings defeats in all fours Tests previously played.

The performance in the three-day warm-up match at Fatullah and their hard but different match practices during training under Jamie Siddons were two major issues, which inspired the Tigers skipper to talk positive.

“We had a very poor Test series in Sri Lanka and New Zealand. But the result of the hard work will be seen from this series. It was really inspiring for us to see the way some of the boys played in the three-day practice match,” said Ashraful in a pre-match briefing at the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium yesterday.

It was a perfect practice for most of the Tigers when the strong South African bowling attack were under the cosh as the home team posted a mammoth 412 in little more than a hundred overs.

The obvious question to the Bangladesh captain was whether he expects the same outcome in the Tests too.

“Not only that, but I am expecting a better show,” was Ashraful’s answer.

The Bangladesh skipper was also confident enough to say that they will be able to change the hearts of the critics in the series.

“We have been going through a very bad time since an impressive World Cup and understandably there has been a lot of criticism regarding our ability. But I am very confident that we will be able to play quality cricket in the series, which will give the critics an impression that we are improving,” he assured.

But the experienced campaigner was wise enough to understand the fact that his batsmen, including himself, should have scored reasonable runs to fulfil the desire.

“What I firmly believe is that our bowlers have the ability — particularly in this kind of conditions — to take 20 wickets but we need contributions from our batsmen. You know, batting is our main headache and the first innings is very important for us,” he observed.

Siddons was also looking forward to seeing his charges improve in the series in his first home assignment, second overall, with the Tigers.

“The boys trained in this venue for the last two months and I am impressed by the batsmen’s application in the practice match. The players already proved that they are good enough to play against a team like South Africa. I hope it will be a good Test match,” Siddons said.

The Australian however warned his boys about the strength of the opponents.

“South Africa are going to be a step up from New Zealand and we will have to play really well to pose any kind of threat to them,” he said referring to the team’s huge defeats in their previous two Tests against the Kiwis.

Like his skipper, Siddons also tried to take inspiration from the impressive show in the three-day practice match at Fatullah.

“The practice match where we posted a reasonable total showed us that the result will take care of itself if we play the game well,” he added.

Now everybody will be looking forward to see whether the home team can carry their practice match’s good show to the battle proper.

We need a good first innings: Ashraful

CHITTAGONG: Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful and Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene look ahead to the second Test of the Grameenphone Series that start tomorrow at the Bir Shrestha Shahid Ruhul Amin Stadium.

MOHAMMAD ASHRAFUL

On the team compositions and the wicket
It’s (the wicket) very dry and devoid of grass. Very different from the one in Dhaka but almost similar to the track we played on against New Zealand here in October. It looks like a pitch where the spinners may play a role. We have retained the same 12 we had given before the first Test with Rajin (Salah) and Sajedul (Islam) out. There is a good chance that Enam (Haque Jr.) might come in. I think he deserves to play on this track. If he plays then it will be in place of a pace bowler and in that case Robin (Mahbubul Alam) will be left out.

Regarding Sri Lanka’s mystery bowler Ajanta Mendis who might play in the second Test after missing the first with an injury
Some of us have played him in one-day internationals during the Asia Cup. But one-dayers and Test matches are different. Mushie (Mushfiqur Rahim) and Roqibul (Hassan) played him quite well. We have seen him bowling against India on television. We also have footages but it is important not to think of him or Muralitharan too much and just try to play ball by ball. He has done very well in recent times and has taken heaps of wickets but our focus will be on playing each ball on its merit because this is a Test match.

On Muttiah Muralitharan taking so many wickets against Bangladesh despite Ashraful’s claim that the Bangladesh batters are reading him better
He is world class and takes wickets against every opposition. Still I think that we are reading him better but we have to show that over a long period of time. Too often we have only done that for short periods.

Expectations for the New Year and the second Test match
We start the New Year with a lot of confidence because of our second innings performance in the first Test in Dhaka. We are getting better as a team and the boys believe that and this year we will have plenty of opportunities to show our improvement. We will try to play well in this Test match.

What he means by ‘playing well’
We need to bat four sessions at least in the first innings. If we do that then we’ll have a decent score on the board. That’s the pre-requisite for us getting a positive result in Test matches and a positive result can be a win also.

MAHELA JAYAWARDENE

Whether the second Test is a fresh beginning for his team after the hard fight in Dhaka
This is the start of another important year for us. Last year we beat India in a Test series, drew England and beat the West Indies in the West Indies for the first time in our history. This is a new year and we have a lot of cricket in front of us. Good to see Ajanta back. We’ll make a decision on him after our practice session. The boys are very keen to start afresh.

On his 100th Test appearance tomorrow and the fact that he is 74 runs away from getting into the elite 8000-run club
A little bit maybe and I can’t say that I’m not emotional. I’m not thinking about the personal milestone. It has been an honour to play for Sri lanka and I have said this before that I never expected to play 100 Test matches when I started off. I want to enjoy the day and the moment and I would love to perform and lead the team to victory in this match.

If he had spoken to Muralitharan, who also played his 100th Test in Chittagong, on the subject
Not really. As I have said before it will be just another five days of hard cricket for us and my focus is on that.

We kept making the same mistakes: Siddons

Mr. Mohammed Ashraful, Captain and Mr. Masrafe Bin Mortaza, Vice Captain at the Zia International Airport prior to their departure on 24th May 2009 for ICC Twenty/20 World Cup 2009 in England

NOTTINGHAM : Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons and captain Mohammad Ashraful at the post-match media conference after the Tigers had bowed out of the ICC World Twenty20 with a 6-wicket loss to Ireland today:

JAMIE SIDDONS

What he thinks as the reason behind the defeat
There were some stupid mental errors by our batsmen. There was some ridiculous batting. It started right from the top. The opening batsmen had to be aggressive but they knew that the Irish bowlers bowled some good slower balls early in the innings but they made the same mistakes. This went right the way through. Tamim Iqbal has got run out like that a few times on this tour, Shakib Al Hasan has got out like that about five times on this tour, same shot, same spot. These are just mental errors. Their skill level is as good as anyone but I am on the borderline of being disappointed and angry. There's nothing we can do if they keep making mental errors like that and the same mistakes over and over. We train and we talk about it and we do everything we possibly can.
Even Ash (Ashraful) made the same mistake. He hit the ball in the same area after getting dropped in the previous over, as if to say catch me this time. It goes down the list. Five, six maybe seven batsmen got out to ridiculous shots.

Whether Bangladesh had succumbed to pressure
I think the cooler heads prevail. It is as simple as that. More senior cricketers, not in terms of international exposure but those who have been around a while, tend to stay cool under pressure. Our guys again under pressure were not up to it. They just needed to make the correct decisions under I won't say a great deal of pressure because Ireland, who are a good side, are not as good as most sides we play against.

Where do the Tigers go from here
All along at the back of my mind has been the West Indies tour and how we can compete and put them under pressure. We got to the West Indies next and that's where we need to show that we are an improved side. Twenty20 cricket is a lot of fun and it's all over in two-three overs. You play two or three bad shots you lose the game and on the other side of the coin two or three good shots can win you a game. Now we are back to 50 over cricket and Test cricket and we have to play a lot better than we did today.

Whether not playing to plan had become habitual
To win the game you need to score 160 if you are batting first. That is the pass score. Ideally we wanted to make 180 but we had a back-up plan where we would scrape to 160. We had a reasonable start and were 40-odd in the first six overs and we were on course for 150 but the batsmen kept disobeying the plan and we ended up with a score of 137. Anyone can get those.
It's not cultural. Our boys tend to get things there way a lot and they don't listen that well and it is time some pressure is put on them to listen, from the captain down.

How Bangladesh should take this tournament
It's Twenty20 and Ireland played well and beat us but we are a better team than they are. Any team can win here like Holland beating England. But we have had some good form lately and I'm sure we will continue to improve. I am looking forward to that tour against the West Indies.

His message to the fans after the World Twenty20 disappointment
I can aplogise for it but I want the players to do that if they think that they have made mistakes. Give some credit to Ireland also. They are a good cricket team. We are coming through the ranks and we should be pushing Ireland aside really and pushing teams like the West Indies. It is a disappointing loss no doubt. We should have gone to the Super Eight. I have no excuses. We were well prepared. We came here nice and early and that's the lowest score we have made on the whole tour.

MOHAMMAD ASHRAFUL

The turning points
I believe losing five wickets inside the first 10 overs. Also, like the coach said, we did not play according to the plan and our shot selection was very poor.

The difference in the match
Ireland today were better than us in all three departments. Our batting effort was poor and we never had enough runs to put them under pressure. This is the worst we have played since arriving in England.

Whether the team felt any pressure against the minnows
Not really. We knew that if we did our process right then we would beat Ireland. Unfortunately all of us top order batsmen were guilty of some very bad cricket.

If Masrafe Bin Mortaza or Naeem Islam could have been sent up the order to boost the run rate
We had thought about that option but with so many wickets going down early we had to decide against that.

The Bangladesh team will depart England at 2:35pm local time (7:35pm Bangladesh Standard Time) on Tuesday. The squad is expected to reach Dhaka at 8:30am on Wednesday.

Grameenphone 9th Special Chess Tournamet-2009

Three players are sharing lead in the points table with maximum 4 points each after end of the 4th round games in the Grameenphone 9th Special Chess Tournament-2009 for Braille chess players, sponsored by Grammeenphone, association with Bangladesh Chess Federation and organised by Bangladesh Braille Chess Society is now being held at Bangladesh Chess Federation hall-room. They are: Md. Ajgor Ali, Md. Mojibul Haque and S.M. Shahin.

Khokon Chandra Borman and Md. Mir Hossain are in 2nd position with 3½ points each.

4th round games were held yesterday (Monday). In the 4th round games: Ajgor beat Sohel Rana, Mujibul beat Abid Hossain, Shahin beat Habibur Rahman Shikder and Khokon drew with Mir Hossain. 5th,6th and 7th round games will be held on today (Tuesday) at the same venue.

It was an opportunity for me to put a hand up: Dilshan

CHITTAGONG: Sri Lankan batsman Tilekaratne Dilshan, who made 162 in the Sri Lankan innings of 371 for 6 on day one of the second Test of the Grameenphone Series and Bangladesh spinner Enamul haque Jr. spoke to the media after close of play.

TILEKARATNE DILSHAN

On his sixth Test hundred that rescued Sri Lanka from potential trouble at 4 for 75
It was an opportunity for someone to put a hand up and I am happy to have contributed.

Regarding the day one pitch
The wicket is very good. It is a good Test wicket but maybe a bit on the slower side.

Whether his innings was a present for skipper Mahela Jayawardene who made his 100th Test appearance
Every game is important for a Test cricketer. It was also my 50th Test match and very important for me also.

On Imrul Kayes dropping a sitter at mid on when he was on 78
That’s part of the game. It gives you an opportunity to capitalize and if you get a let off you should then try and make a big score.

Whether he expects Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajanta Mendis to dominate on this track
I think it will turn for those two. The bounce could be a bit uneven later on and they (Bangladesh batsmen) haven’t played Ajanta (Mendis) much. So I hope both bowlers will do well here.

If the unevenness of the pitch also help paceman Dilhara Fernando when Sri Lanka field
Dilhara is quick and can be difficult to face because the pitch could be a up and down.

On the secrets of his exceptional fielding
I work extra hours on fielding and do different drills to improve. I had worked with Trevor Penny for three years and we did a lot of things before the World Cup and now I am working with the current coaches. I do different things on fielding individually.

Whether good fielders are natural
I don’t think so. If you work hard only then you can deliver. Otherwise it doesn’t get easy.

ENAMUL HAQUE JR.

How it felt to bowl at home after a long gap
It has been almost a year since I last bowled at home. I have to admit that there was a tinge of nerves initially and didn’t give the ball flight often enough. I’m confident that things will be okay tomorrow.

How the day was
It could have been a lot better if we hadn’t dropped three catches and missed a stumping chance. Still I think we are in it. The situation I should say is 50-50 after day one and if we can bowl them out early tomorrow and bat well then we should be back in the game. We just need a big effort from the batsmen.

On the Murali and Mendis threat
The pitch will be conducive to spinners as there are cracks developing already. But I expect the wicket to play well on day two also and then start deteriorating. That’s why it is important for us to get the remaining wickets early and then make best use of the batting conditions. If we can have them batting in the second innings then there will be a lot of assistance for spinners.

Whether it was a familiar thing for him to see Bangladesh to throw advantage away on day one of a Test due to fielding lapses
I don’t remember that happening during the last two-three years. On the contrary I think our fielding has improved a lot. Today was one of those days and there are days when we take difficult catches and miss easy ones. I am sure that if you give Imrul ten such catches he’d take each and every one of those. The misses today were just accidents.

On the way Dilshan attacked the Bangladesh bowlers after lunch
He plays that way against every team. He is very positive and plays attackingly. We also bowled poorly after lunch and tea.

BCB allows ICL returnees to play domestic cricket

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to allow Bangladeshi cricketers who had been under contract with the Indian Cricket League (ICL), to participate in domestic cricket.

The BCB Board of Directors in their Meeting on 09 May 2009 had decided to offer amnesty to the cricketers who would terminate their contract with the ICL by 15 June 2009. Subsequently, the 14 cricketers who were under contract with the ICL formally applied to the BCB within the deadline seeking permission to return to domestic cricket. They also submitted the necessary documents to confirm that they have terminated their contract with the ICL.

As they have fulfilled the requirements to avail the amnesty the BCB therefore recognizes that these players are eligible to participate in all forms of domestic cricket with effect from 16 June 2009.

Day three is crucial: Mortaza

CHITTAGONG: Bangladesh’s hero on day two Mashrafe Bin Mortaza who took 3 for 58 in the Sri Lanka first innings and then hit a face-saving 63 to help the Tigers save the follow on and Sri Lanka’s ace paceman Chaminda Vaas spoke to the Media after the day’s play.

MASHRAFE BIN MORTAZA

His plan after Bangladesh were nine down for 145 and still 40 away from the follow on target
The plan was to save the follow on. I tried to take as much strike as possible but Rajib (Shahadat) was a brilliant partner. We have batted together in similar situations a few times before so I had confidence in him.

On facing Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajanta Mendis and hitting both for sixes
Muralitharan had got me seven or eight times before and every time I had got out early. That’s why my goal was to survive first which I managed to do today. Also boys in the dressing room and Ash (Ashraful) in particular gave me tips on how to handle him. I was thinking more about Murali to be honest. Mendis is obviously world class and currently the top bowler in international cricket but today I found Murali more difficult comparatively.

Whether the wicket was starting to deteriorate
Not really. There are cracks but not that prominent and if you look back to the Test here against New Zealand in October the pitch actually got better for batting in the last three days.

Whether Bangladesh were still in the match
I think day three is crucial in the context of the match. If we can bowl well and restrict them then this match can turn into a good contest. We have to show the application like in Mirpur.

On the top order failure
They bowled well with the new ball and Mendis is always dangerous when the ball is new. The turning point was the wicket of Ashraful and maybe that of Mushfique (Rahim). They both got set and then got out trying to play shots.

How he looks at long-time mate Ashraful’s fatal reverse sweep on 45 after missing two previous attempts
He had played brilliantly until he got out. Ash has a habit of hurrying through the 40s and 90s. Also, I think he spotted a scoring opportunity as the off side fielders were brought in and Murali came round the wicket.

On his bowling in the match
The pitch was expected to aid the spinners more so I just concentrated on hitting the right line and length. I had a bit of luck also probably because this is a slow wicket.

CHAMINDA VAAS

Whether it was frustrating not to get the last Bangladesh pair out before they saved the follow on
I think we bowled well on a slow wicket. The spinners were very good and tried to get them out but Mortaza batted extremely well.

On Ashraful’s dismissal
I felt the skipper handled the spinners very well but it is not easy to stay at the wicket and not score runs. Our seamers put pressure from both ends and when they were off Bangladesh needed some runs and I thought Ashraful got out trying to do that.

Whether he considers his team favourites from here on
We need to bat well first. We have a 178-run lead and need to put up a good score.

On the condition of the pitch
The pitch is slow with low bounce and I don’t think it will change much in the next three days. I believe it could get slower and slower as the match progresses.

Olympic Day Run held in city and five Div HQs

Inauguration of Olympic Day Run 2009

The Olympic Day Run organised by the Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) held amidst fanfare and enthusiasm in the capital and five other divisional headquarters on Tuesday.

About five thousand people of different ages including women and children took part in the annual event.

The three-day programme taken by BOA to uplift the virtues - Move, Learn, Discover - to mark the Olympic Day 2009 came to an end with completion of the Day Run.

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhit and State Minister for Youth and Sports Ahad Ali Sarkar were present at the opening ceremony.

BOA Vice President Mizanur Rahman Manu, Secretary General Kutubuddin Ahmed, Coca Cola Far East Limited Country Manager Debasish Dev, Exim Bank Director Nurul Fazal Bulbul, The Blazer BD Managing Director Kazi Rajibuddin Ahmed Chapal and other BOA members were also present on the occasion.

The Day Run started from Ramna Tennis Complex and terminated at the Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS) after passing through Engineers Institute, Foreign Ministry, Press Club, Baitul Mokkaram and National Sports Council areas.

Band show and cultural programmes were also arranged to give extra colour to the occasion at the BNS.

To mark the Olympic Day, the BOA also arranged a voluntary blood donation programme on the NSC Tower premises with the participation of large number of donors.

On the first day (Sunday) of the 3-day BOA programme, a seminar was held at the NSC conference room titled - Present Condition of Bangladesh Sports and the Way to Progress, with the participation of Olympians, national sports award winners, and some veteran athletes.

On the 2nd day (Monday), the BOA arranged a painting competition for children in three age groups -- Under-9, Under-12 and Under-16 -- at the NSC conference room in the afternoon.

State Minister for Youth and Sports Ahad Ali Sarkar distributed prizes among the winners of the drawing competition.

We have very good standards: Jayawardene

CHITTAGONG : Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene, man of the match and man of the series Tilakaratne Dilshan and Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons spoke to the media after the home side’s 465-run defeat in the second and final Test.

MAHELA JAYAWARDENE
His feelings after a resounding series win
Very happy. We knew it was going to be tough considering the conditions we were given. We knew we had to adjust. We were in trouble at times but the guys showed a lot of fight and character. Dilshan in the first innings showed that when we were 4 for 75 and that is something we encourage the boys to do, to be the best they can. I am very proud of the players. We are a good unit and we have very good standards. We just need to continue working hard and improving. At the moment we are 4th in the rankings and we should try and push ourselves further up.

Whether he was disappointed at not getting a big score in his 100 th Test match
Not really I tried my best but it was not an easy wicket to bat. It was easy for Dilshan but not for the rest of us. I am not concerned as long as we win matches.

Whether he remembers ever seeing Muttiah Muralitharan going wicketles in an innings
There are not that many. He didn’t get to bowl a long spell and Ajanta struck early, Dilhara and Vaas took wickets and Dilshan came out of the blue and picked up 4 wickets. It was good to see that we can create opportunities with the other bowlers and that’s what Test cricket is about.

On the help for spinners on this track on day four
The spinners I thought got help from the first day.

Difference between the Dhaka Test and the Chittagong Test
This one is a tougher wicket. It slower and has less pace and bounce than Dhaka. The game plan has to be different here because playing shots is not easy. Our guys adjusted according to the game plan. They (Bangladesh) could not.

Whether it was a serious decision to give Tilakaratne Dilshan the ball
Dilshan had bowled in the first Test and is a frontline bowler. Ajanta at that time was not bowling well for me and he was giving Shakib (Al Hasan) too many loose balls. There was a rough patch outside the left hander’s off stump and as Murali was bowling from the other end I thought of giving Dilshan a go as he bowls wicket to wicket. After that he started taking wickets and I couldn’t change him.

TILAKARATNE DILSHAN

How the match went for him
It is a great feeling scoring runs. Really happy with my performance

Whether he knew about Alan Border’s record of scoring two 150s in a Test and was disappointed at not equaling the record
I didn’t know that. I just stuck to the game plan of playing through the first session.

JAMIE SIDDONS

On how frustrating the result was for him
I am disappointed. I wouldn’t have been disappointed if it was a turning wicket that suited their bowlers. I am disappointed with the wicket I saw but I don’t think the pitch played a massive role in some of our wickets.

After the 400 in Dhaka where everyone including me saw huge improvement in the young guys this was not what was expected. But I still see that six or seven of our first eight batsmen haven’t played 10 Test matches yet and against two of the world’s best bowlers, probably the best bowlers in the world at the moment, it is a tough ask.

They were also a bit overawed I think. Mendis took three wickets in no time and we were again four for nothing. I am disappointed that our top four can’t consistently make runs and it is always Ash, Shakib and Muishie, the same three trying to save our skin. Disappointed that we didn’t show that we are improving although without doubt we are. Just didn’t show that today.

His assessment of the dismal performance
When you walk out there with 600 behind with no chance of winning it is tough. The 500-plus target in Dhaka was also a massive one but we handled that pretty well. There are no excuses for the performance today.

The wicket was okay. Some of the players I think were a little inexperienced to handle the pressure that Mendis and Murali and Vaas put on them. I mean those names bowling at you is pretty tough for a team of players who haven’t played 10 Test matches. I guess our more senior players like Ash who looked at ease making 45 in the first innings, Shakib who oozes confident has played a lot of one-dayers and Mushfique who has played affair bit of cricket showed that experience can help when you have the talent.

They are getting there and I would love to do this all over again in two years time with the same guys and I can assure you that we’ll be a much better team.

GP congratulates the National Cricket Team

Flower bouquet handed over ceremony.

A delegation from Grameenphone Ltd. headed by Rubaba Dowla, Chief Communications Officer (CCO) visited Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday to congratulate on the recent National Cricket Team's victory over West Indies.

The CCO, Grameenphone handed over a flower bouquet to Lieutenant Gen. Sina Ibn Jamali, awc, psc, President BCB, congratulating on the first Test Series win on an international ground.

Grameenphone - the proud sponsor of the National Cricket Team since 2003 has been closely associated with BCB in the development of cricket in Bangladesh.

Few significant contributions by the Company encompass the initiation of Pacer Hunt in 2004 & 2007, and development of the Grameenphone-BCB National Cricket Academy in Mirpur, established in March 2007.

Over the years Grameenphone has sponsored several home cricket series: with England (2003), Sri Lanka (2006), Australia (2006), India (2007) and the Tri-Nation Series BD-SL-ZIM (2008-09).

Grameenphone also sponsored the first ever Bangladesh female cricket team that won the tournament played in Malaysia in 2007 and the BD-SL-PAK Tri-Nation series in 2009. Earlier, Grameenphone had also been associated with the Premier Division Cricket League.

Rubel The New Face

Chittagong Division Fast bowler Rubel Hossain was the only newcomer in the Bangladesh squad selected for the upcoming Grameenphone Tri Nation Cup and Grameenphone ODI Series. The 19-year-old quick was one of the four pacemen in the 14-man team along with Masrafe Bin Mortaza, Mahbubul Alam and Nazmul Hossain.

Seamer Nazmul Hossain and all-rounder Mahmud Ullah Riyad returned to the international fold while Enamul Haque Jr. also made a comeback to the ODI side having played his last match exactly three years ago. Off-spinning all-rounder Naeem Islam made the side after recovering from an injury. There was no room for batsmen Imrul Kayes, Rajin Salah and quick bowlers Shahadat Hossain and Sajedul Islam who were all part of the squad that featured in the just concluded Grameenphone Test Series against Sri Lanka.

“Rubel has performed well for the under 19, Academy and Bangladesh A side and been impressive in the domestic first class level also. He has extra pace and a deceptive sling-shot action. He is an attacking bowler and comes in for Sajedul Islam who was in the Test squad and is more of a longer version bowler,” said BCB’s chairman of selectors Rafiq-ul Alam.

Nazmul was a straight swap for Shahadat. “Shahadat had been rather expensive in the ODIs he played last year. The coaching staff wanted a steady and accurate bowler and Nazmul fitted the bill. Shahadat is by no means out of our plans and we believe that returning to domestic cricket will be beneficial for him at this stage and I am sure he will be back in the national side soon,” Alam added.

Mahmud Ullah’s inclusion was expected after a stellar domestic first class season where he came second in the run scorer’s list and averaged 54.61 and hit four hundreds in the last four games for Dhaka Division. “He has been rewarded for his batting form. Unfortunately Imrul Kayes had to give way as he has not managed to deliver despite getting opportunities. He will remain in frame though as he is someone we think will perform in the future,” said Alam.

Alam also said experienced batsman Salah was being considered for the longer version games at the moment.

Regarding taking Enamul in the ODI side despite the bowler not featuring in ODIs for a while Alam said his experience was one of the main reasons. “We don’t have Razzak (Abdur) at the moment so we needed a specialist back up. Besides Enam’s record against Zimbabwe is very good indeed. We also thought about Sohrawordi Shuvo (the highest wicket-taker in this year’s National Cricket League first class competition) but couldn’t find a spot for him as in Riyad, Mehrab (Hossain Jr.) and Naeem we already have three multi-skilled players,” said Alam

I am very confident: Siddons

DHAKA: Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons, captain Mohammad Ashraful and Zimbabwe skipper Prosper Utseya look ahead to the opening clash of the Grameenphone Tri Nation Cup at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium tomorrow.

JAMIE SIDDONS

On how confident he is going into the match with Zimbabwe
I’m confident like I was against Ireland. I think we are a better side but it is the players who have to deliver on the day. I am confident in the preparation and we have the best team we can put in the park. Based on our ranking and our position in to be the one-day ranking and given that we are an improving cricket team, I am very confident.

Whether he had studied Zimbabwe’s performance in the 3-day match against the GP-BCB NCA
I have got very good feedback from our coach. At the end of the day it is all about how our players execute their skills. Their bowlers will bowl the ball and their batsmen will attack early, we know that and we have to be prepared to put the ball in the right areas. We need to bat, bowl and field better than they do and the game would take care of itself.

Whether Bangladesh’s poor catching in the second Test against Sri Lanka was a concern
I think there’s a lot of concentration problem in Test cricket and our players don’t do it that well. We need to get better at that. For one day cricket they should be switched on because it’s only 50 overs and should expect the ball to come to them all the time. I don’t have any problems with our catching. I thought it was a bad day and probably cost us a chance to bowl them out cheaply. We can’t afford to do that and we are trying hard.

If the non-performing Bangladesh top four was still a worry
We have our more experienced players at the top four and I’m confident they would deliver. The Test team is a lot different than the one day side and most of the boys haven’t played that many Test matches. I am confident our top four would do a much better job than they did in the Tests.

Bangladesh’s team composition
Rubel (Hossain) and Enam (Haque Jr.) are not going to be in the 12 and the most likely 12th man would be Riyad (Mahmud Ullah).

MOHAMMAD ASHRAFUL

Whether he is relieved at facing Zimbabwe after spending the last few months tackling the best sides in the world
Every international is of equal importance to us. The Zimbabwean players have been together for four years and therefore the experience is there and they are a decent side. We have to perform in all three departments to get a positive result. We are more focused on our own game.

The current standings of the two teams since Bangladesh’s 5-0 demolition in 2006-07
I can’t comment on Zimbabwe but we have improved although that has not been reflected in the results. I think we have a pretty balanced ODI team now. After playing a good number of ODIs against Zimbabwe and Kenya in the lead up to the 2007 World Cup and after winning almost all the matches we got into a winning habit and won against some top teams during the last three years.

Whether the team has extra incentive to spring a surprise in the Tri-Nation Cup
We don’t want to pull off a surprise or two. Our target is to become consistent and to play good cricket.

PROSPER UTSEYA

On Zimbabwe’s preparation
We have had good preparation. We played against Sri Lanka the world’s top two spinners before coming to Bangladesh. The boys have been together for a number of years and there is good team spirit. We are confident of doing well here. We target is to play well and win every match here.

Difference between the team that was thrashed 5-0 in 2006-07 and the present side
The guys are more experienced than they were four years ago and playing against Sri Lanka and the best spinners in the world has given us a lot of confidence.

On the 3-day match which they won by 195 runs
The three day match gave our batsmen the opportunity to spend some time at the wicket and get used to the conditions. I am happy with the preparations as the batsmen and the bowlers performed and it was especially good for some of the new players.

The Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium wicket
The wicket from what I have seen is a lot different from Bogra. The Bogra pitch had grass but here the grass has been cut. I expect the ball to skid on the bat here.
