Rubel The New Face

Chittagong Division Fast bowler Rubel Hossain was the only newcomer in the Bangladesh squad selected for the upcoming Grameenphone Tri Nation Cup and Grameenphone ODI Series. The 19-year-old quick was one of the four pacemen in the 14-man team along with Masrafe Bin Mortaza, Mahbubul Alam and Nazmul Hossain.

Seamer Nazmul Hossain and all-rounder Mahmud Ullah Riyad returned to the international fold while Enamul Haque Jr. also made a comeback to the ODI side having played his last match exactly three years ago. Off-spinning all-rounder Naeem Islam made the side after recovering from an injury. There was no room for batsmen Imrul Kayes, Rajin Salah and quick bowlers Shahadat Hossain and Sajedul Islam who were all part of the squad that featured in the just concluded Grameenphone Test Series against Sri Lanka.

“Rubel has performed well for the under 19, Academy and Bangladesh A side and been impressive in the domestic first class level also. He has extra pace and a deceptive sling-shot action. He is an attacking bowler and comes in for Sajedul Islam who was in the Test squad and is more of a longer version bowler,” said BCB’s chairman of selectors Rafiq-ul Alam.

Nazmul was a straight swap for Shahadat. “Shahadat had been rather expensive in the ODIs he played last year. The coaching staff wanted a steady and accurate bowler and Nazmul fitted the bill. Shahadat is by no means out of our plans and we believe that returning to domestic cricket will be beneficial for him at this stage and I am sure he will be back in the national side soon,” Alam added.

Mahmud Ullah’s inclusion was expected after a stellar domestic first class season where he came second in the run scorer’s list and averaged 54.61 and hit four hundreds in the last four games for Dhaka Division. “He has been rewarded for his batting form. Unfortunately Imrul Kayes had to give way as he has not managed to deliver despite getting opportunities. He will remain in frame though as he is someone we think will perform in the future,” said Alam.

Alam also said experienced batsman Salah was being considered for the longer version games at the moment.

Regarding taking Enamul in the ODI side despite the bowler not featuring in ODIs for a while Alam said his experience was one of the main reasons. “We don’t have Razzak (Abdur) at the moment so we needed a specialist back up. Besides Enam’s record against Zimbabwe is very good indeed. We also thought about Sohrawordi Shuvo (the highest wicket-taker in this year’s National Cricket League first class competition) but couldn’t find a spot for him as in Riyad, Mehrab (Hossain Jr.) and Naeem we already have three multi-skilled players,” said Alam
